2026 Nissan Leaf Hero

The Nissan model that made EVs accessible to the American driver over a decade ago has undergone a significant redesign for the 2026 model year. The Leaf spent its first two generations as a hatchback with quirky flair, but enters its third generation as a confident-looking crossover, giving drivers more range, versatility, and practicality than the previous Leaf version. It also charges faster than its predecessor, and the new powertrain brings improved range and performance: up to 303 miles of range and up to 214 ponies. The Leaf’s redesign gives it a new look too, with “Easter egg” style elements that subtly pay homage to the automaker’s heritage.

The revised lineup replaces the former base S trim with the S+, and adds the Platinum+ to slot in above the SV+. The Platinum+ sports distinctive holographic taillights displaying symbols to represent the numbers “two” and “three” (pronounced “ni” and “san,” respectively, in Japanese) to honor the brand’s name. Across the lineup, the wheels and charge port cap also incorporate the “2-3” symbolism. A new front grille and ducktail spoiler increase efficiency, while flush windows reduce drag with a seamless look. New auto-retracting door handles – the first of their kind on a Nissan model – further streamline the Leaf. It stands out as Nissan’s most aerodynamically efficient model yet, with a drag coefficient of 0.26 (a reduction from its predecessor’s 0.29 drag coefficient).

Trims and Powertrain

The front-wheel-drive 2026 Leaf gives drivers a choice of three trims: S+, SV+, and Platinum+. The AC synchronous motor makes 214 horsepower and 261 lb.-ft. of torque across the lineup. The S+ returns an EPA-estimated 131 MPGe city and 111 MPGe highway, with a range of 303 miles. The SV+ follows with an estimated 122 city/105 highway MPGe, and a 288-mile range. The Platinum+ achieves 110 city/96 highway MPGe, with a 259-mile range. The 75-kWh battery pack charges fully in 6.5 hours with a 240-volt charger, but can charge from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 35 minutes in peak conditions with DC fast charging. The Leaf is compatible with the North American Charging Standard (NACS), and its vehicle-to-load capabilities allow it to be used as a power source.

A drive mode selector provides Standard, Eco, Sport, and the customizable Personal drive settings, and standard regenerative braking is complemented by paddles on the SV+ and Platinum+. All Leafs have independent front struts and a multi-link rear suspension (both with coil springs over shock absorbers and a stabilizer bar) plus an Intelligent Trace Control brake-actuated limited-slip differential.

Standard Equipment

The S+ comes with proximity keyless entry with walk-away lock, cloth upholstery, automatic climate control, a 12.3-inch reconfigurable LCD instrument cluster, a leatherette-wrapped steering wheel, push-button start, a myQ Connected Garage door opener, LED headlights with auto-on/off, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, two USB ports, a 12-volt DC power outlet, an acoustic laminated windshield, a body-colored grille, a 60/40-split folding second row bench, and 18-inch steel wheels with aero covers. The SV+ receives TailorFit leatherette upholstery, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with two-way lumbar support, heated front seats, a 14.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless smartphone charging, exterior mirrors with integrated turn indicators, four USB ports, and 18-inch machined aluminum wheels. The Platinum+ boasts a memory driver’s seat with four-way lumbar support, a heated steering wheel, a dimming panoramic moonroof, a motion-activated power-liftgate, heated rear seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated exterior mirrors, a trim-exclusive LED rear center light, a 120-volt power outlet, roof rails, and 19-inch machined aluminum wheels.

Driver-Assist and Safety Technology

Nissan Safety Shield 360 is installed on every 2026 Leaf, providing automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot warning, lane departure alert, rear automatic braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and high beam assist. The standard driver-assist suite also includes Intelligent Driver Alertness, adaptive cruise control with traffic stop-and-go, traffic sign recognition, a rear sonar parking sensor, brake assist, hill start assist, and a 360-degree view monitor. The SV+ and Platinum+ add front parking sensors. Nissan’s Pro-Pilot Assist Hands-On semi-autonomous driver-assist technology is also found on every trim.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The S+ accesses the base NissanConnect infotainment suite through a 12.3-inch touchscreen with over-the-air updates, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a NissanConnect Wi-Fi hotspot, Siri Eyes Free voice recognition, a virtual personal assistant, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, and SiriusXM 360L. The SV+ and Platinum+ add Google built-in with Google Maps navigation, Google Assistant, and real-time weather and traffic updates. The S+ is outfitted with four speakers with speed-sensitive volume, while the SV+ moves up to six. The Platinum+ reaches higher with a Bose Personal Plus audio system that has 10 speakers plus additional speakers built into the front headrests. Every 2026 Leaf can access subscription-based NissanConnect Services via SiriusXM, and drivers can remotely access their Leaf through the MyNISSAN app.
