The 2023 Maxima is a stylish full-sized four-door that Nissan produces in three trims: SV, SR, and Platinum. It’s one of the few sedans that still comes with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, which stirs up a satisfying 300 hp and 261 lb.-ft. of torque. Connected to this lively mill is a smooth-operating continuously variable transmission (CVT) that directs power to the front-wheel drivetrain. The Maxima returns decent fuel economy with an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.
Nissan has never cut any corners in outfitting the Maxima, and that hasn’t changed for 2023. Despite being the base trim, the SV gets some enticing features, including remote start, leather seats (heated in the front row), LED exterior lights, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, heated side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, quad-tipped chrome exhaust finishers, proximity entry (Nissan Intelligent Key), push-button ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. It also has two USB ports (one USB-A and one USB-C), illuminated vanity mirrors, power-adjustable front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a 60/40-split fold-down rear seatback.
The SR ramps things up with premium leather upholstery with diamond-quilted inserts, ventilated front seats with a thigh cushion extender for the driver, LED fog lights, reverse gear tilt-down side mirrors with driver’s-side auto-dimming, a panoramic moonroof, adjustable ambient interior lighting, position memory settings (for the driver’s seat and side mirrors), a heated steering wheel, and an extra USB-A and USB-C port. This trim hosts a few sporty enhancements, too, like active noise cancellation and enhancing technology, a rear spoiler, black exterior accents, aluminum sport pedals, and a charcoal headliner.
While the Platinum doesn’t have the SR’s track-inspired attributes (the rear spoiler, black exterior accents, sport pedals, charcoal headliner, or sound enhancement tech), it climbs the luxury ladder with semi-aniline leather seats (also with diamond-quilted inserts), heated rear outboard seats, a power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel with position memory, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a power rear-window sunshade, wood interior trim, and illuminated kick plates.
Nissan’s award-winning bundle of advanced driving aids, Safety Shield 360, is standard in the last-hurrah Maxima, with more sophisticated offerings added to the higher trims. The SV comes with intelligent cruise control, intelligent driver alertness (driver attention monitoring), intelligent forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, reverse automatic braking, high beam assist, and traffic sign recognition. The SV and Platinum also receive intelligent lane intervention, Nissan’s Intelligent Around-View Monitor, and front parking sensors.
Across the board, the ’23 Maxima boasts an attractive infotainment setup. All trims get an 8-inch touchscreen with built-in navigation, a Wi-Fi hotspot courtesy of NissanConnect, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, and a hands-free text messaging assistant. Although the SV comes with an eight-speaker audio system, the SR and Platinum are both elevated by an 11-speaker Bose with Centerpoint 2 surround-sound.
