As Nissan’s midsized sedan, the Altima does well to connect the most appealing aspects of its four-door siblings, starting with the Sentra’s budget-friendliness and the Maxima’s abundance of amenities. Currently in its sixth generation, the Altima is still going strong thanks to its sporty good looks, refinement, and excellent fuel economy. Plus, it’s one of the few sedans that’s available with all-wheel drive – a definite perk if you drive a lot in New England. The 2022 version arrives with a new option for the SR trim called the Midnight Edition Package, which blacks out some exterior elements and adds some sought-after features.

Trims and Powertrain

Five trim levels are available for the 2022 Nissan Altima: S, SV, SR, SL, and Platinum. The standard powerplant in all of the above is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 188 hp (in the Platinum, the output is 182 hp). The SR qualifies for a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that produces 248 hp and 273 lb.-ft. of torque with premium fuel. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) accompanies both engines. Front-wheel drive is standard on most trims, except for the Platinum, which is only made with all-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is optional for every trim except the base S and the turbo SR.

The ’22 Altima excels when it comes to efficiency. The EPA estimates that the S gets 28 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway, whereas the FWD SV, SR, and SL return 27 city/37 highway. The AWD SV and SL achieve 26 city/36 highway, while the AWD SR and Platinum will give you 25 city/35 highway. The SR with the 2.0-liter turbo pulls off 25 city/34 highway.

The S gets some modern conveniences like automatic headlights, remote keyless entry, and keyless ignition, along with push-button start, a USB port, a 60/40-split folding rear seatback, and a multimedia setup with a 7-inch touchscreen, voice recognition, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, and a six-speaker sound system. It’s also stocked with an abundance of active driver aids via Nissan Safety Shield 360. These technologies consist of forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, lane departure warning, and driver attention alert. With the available Driver Assist Package, the S will gain blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, and reverse automatic braking.

The SV is upgraded with the contents of the Driver Assist Package as standard equipment. It also gets LED headlights, a power driver’s seat, an additional USB port and two USB-C ports, and a 7-inch digital gauge cluster. The infotainment system in this trim moves up to an 8-inch touchscreen and adds smartphone integration (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), and SiriusXM satellite radio.

Some more luxurious items are offered through the optional Premium Package, which bundles power lumbar support for the driver’s seat, an electronic parking brake, automatic brake hold, dual chrome exhaust finishers, heated side mirrors with LED turn-signal indicators, heated front seats, a moonroof, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, black interior trim, lane keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Most of the items in the Premium Package are optional for the SR, except for the leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, which both come standard. It also shows off sleek black exterior elements, sport cloth upholstery, and carbon-fiber interior trim. The Midnight Edition Package will add some of the features from the Premium Package (the power lumbar support for the driver’s seat, heated side mirrors with turn signal indicators, moonroof, and heated front seats), in addition to LED fog lights, black Midnight Edition badges, package-specific wheels, and a black grille and rear spoiler. Adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist are not offered for the SR.

The SL dials up the luxury with the remaining features from the Premium Package, as well as the LED fog lights. It also receives two-zone automatic climate control, climate control settings for the remote start system, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, wood interior trim, and boosts to the infotainment setup: navigation and a premium nine-speaker Bose audio system. On the driver-assist front, it adds ProPILOT Assist (intelligent adaptive cruise control), lane keeping assist, and traffic sign recognition.

The top-tier Platinum is, as expected, loaded with standard features. It adds an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a HomeLink universal garage door opener, interior accent lighting, and position memory settings for the driver’s seat and side mirrors. Nissan’s Intelligent Around-View Monitor joins the driver-assist suite.
