The ’23 Altima is made in S, SV, SR, SL, and SR VC-Turbo trim levels. Most come with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 188 hp and 180 lb.-ft. of torque; however, the aptly named SR VC-Turbo has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder variable compression engine producing 248 hp and 273 lb.-ft. of torque. Both powerplants use a continuously variable transmission (CVT), and while front-wheel drive is the default, all-wheel drive is available for all trims but the S and the SR VC-Turbo.
As stated by the EPA, the S and SV fulfill an estimated 27 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway. The SR and SL also achieve 27 mpg in the city, but their highway fuel economy drops by 2 mpg. With AWD, the ’23 Altima returns 26 city/36 highway. The least efficient version of the Altima is the SR VC-Turbo, which gets 25 city/34 highway.
Not many base models in this segment have remote start, but the Altima S does. It’s also equipped with auto on/off LED headlights, 16-inch steel wheels, keyless entry, push-button ignition, a 5-inch multi-information display, and a 60/40-split fold-down rear seatback. The SV gets 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, proximity entry (Nissan Intelligent Key), a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a 7-inch digital gauge cluster (Drive-Assist). The SR is enhanced with chrome exhaust finishers, darkened exterior accents, 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, illuminated vanity mirrors, sport cloth upholstery, and geometric-patterned silver interior trim.
The SL takes a more luxurious turn with a moonroof, side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, acoustic laminated glass, chrome exterior accents, a body-color rear diffuser, and remote climate-control settings. It also gets power adjustments for the front passenger’s seat and driver’s lumbar support, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, dark wood interior trim, a wireless phone charger, and rear passenger AC vents. The SR VC-Turbo of course gets the peppier engine, along with most of those same high-end contents as the SL. But its track-inspired personality shines through thanks to a rear spoiler, a charcoal-colored rear diffuser, splash guards, active noise-cancellation technology, sport-leather upholstery, and carbon-fiber interior trim.
The 2023 Altima has a foundation of important advanced driving aids thanks to the Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite. In the S and SV, this bundle includes intelligent forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, reverse automatic braking, rear parking sensors, automatic high beams, intelligent driver alertness, and hill start assist. Active ride control and intelligent trace control are added at the SR level. The SL and SR VC-Turbo both have ProPILOT Assist adaptive cruise control, intelligent lane intervention, a surround-view camera, automatic brake hold, and traffic sign recognition.
The S has an infotainment system that can be controlled using its 7-inch touchscreen or voice recognition. Its other noteworthy features are Siri Eyes Free, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, a six-speaker sound system, a USB-A port, and an auxiliary audio input jack. The SV and SR are elevated with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Three extra USB ports (one type-A and two type-C) are provided as well. Both the SL and the SR VC-Turbo boast a 12.3-inch touchscreen, built-in navigation, NissanConnect remote vehicle services, a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a premium Bose audio system with nine speakers.
Two packages are available to enhance the appeal of the ’23 Altima. The SV Premium Package packs in a ton of features, including technology upgrades such as a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, navigation, NissanConnect remote vehicle services, a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless phone charging. For safety, this package delivers ProPILOT Assist adaptive cruise control, an electronic parking brake, intelligent lane intervention, active ride control, intelligent trace control, automatic brake hold, and traffic sign recognition. Its luxury offerings consist of power lumbar support for the driver’s seat, a moonroof, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. To top it off, there are some aesthetic improvements: body-color side mirrors, dual chrome exhaust finishers, and dark wood interior trim. The SR Premium Package bundles most of the contents of the SV Premium Package (those that aren’t already standard), in addition to a power-adjustable front passenger’s seat, sport leather upholstery, and carbon fiber interior trim.
