Overview

The Nissan Maxima, now in its eighth generation, is back for the 2019 model year and looking great after a mid-cycle refresh. The styling has been updated all around, including a more prominent grille and redesigned head- and taillights that make it more obviously a sibling to other recently updated members of the Nissan lineup. The Japanese automaker has packed its flagship sedan with more safety technology and other premium features, both standard and optional.

This year’s Maxima is offered in six different trims: S, SV, SL, SR, Platinum, and Platinum Reserve. They all get a 3.5-liter, 6-cylinder engine that delivers 300 horsepower. Nissan’s patented Continuous Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVVTCS) ensures quality fuel economy and lower emissions.

Safety

The 2019 Nissan Maxima is packed with the latest safety features, which are part of the Nissan Intelligent Mobility suite of technologies. All trims get intelligent forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking (the SR, Platinum, and Platinum Reserve have an upgraded version that includes pedestrian detection; they also get intelligent lane intervention. All levels but the base are set up with a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert. An Intelligent Around View Monitor is optional on the SR and standard on the Platinum and Platinum Reserve.


 

 

Technology

Forward-thinking is the theme in the 2019 Maxima, as it’s well outfitted with standard connectivity features. Aside from Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, all trims get USB and USB-C connections; the S and SV have one of each, while every other trim includes two of each. High-end audio comes standard with every SL, SR, Platinum, and Platinum Reserve model, in the form of a Bose Premium audio system. It’s an eleven-speaker system with Centerpoint 2 surround sound technology. All of those trims also have Nissan Active Noise Cancellation for a quieter, more relaxing driving experience. All trims get remote start and Nissan Intelligent Key, which lets you start the engine, lock and unlock the doors, and sound the alarm all from your smartphone.


Passenger Comfort

The base S trim comes with intelligent climate control as well as remote start, so you maintain just the right temperature, even before you get into the car. A one-touch panoramic moonroof is optional on the SR and standard on both the Platinum and Platinum Reserve trims. Climate-control seats (heated and cooled) are included on the SR, Platinum, and Platinum Reserve. Heated front seats come standard on the SV and SL; heated rear seats are optional on the Platinum and included on the Platinum Reserve, so that the backseat passengers can be just as comfortable.

All five grades above the S come with leather seats. Italian diamond-quilted Alcantara leather inserts provide a premium seating experience in the SR, while the Platinum trim gets the luxury of Ascot leather diamond-quilted inserts and the Platinum Reserve takes it one step further with Semi-Aniline leather-appointed seats.
